1:45 AM Sleepwalking

An 8 page comic I created in Procreate for fun earlier this year. All of the textures and panels are hand-drawn. I like to make messy art/cartoons and use the eraser tool to carve out lines and shapes, which creates a somewhat unique art-style that is both detailed and a bit "off" which was the general tone I was going for with this project. The fact that not all the panels are perfectly aligned or straight was a personal design choice for me in order to tell this short story and to give it some extra texture.

These are my two favorite pages out of the 8 due to the close-up expressions and the atmospheric panels after the main character gets off work late at night in the middle of an empty city. I thought waiting for a bus late at night would be a great way to introduce these two characters as it is meant to be a "jarring" experience and shake the main character out of his work-related slump.
Here are some initial character sketches as well as a process for another page I created prior to starting this project - going from rough pen sketches on A4 printer paper to procreate and then into illustrator to clean up the boxes.
This is a poster I made showcasing seven different icons I wanted to use in my comic. Not all of them made the cut, but this was a fun project.
These are some concept pieces I've been working on. The first two were done entirely in Procreate, and the last one (the finished piece in full color) was transferred over to photoshop to be colored and have detail added to it. These are "concept pieces" for my world-building involving this project. More below:
As you can see below, the earlier stages of coming up with the final concept piece were rough and sketchy at first. The first piece was done on A4 printer paper before being transferred into procreate and then cleaned up before being moved over to photoshop to add more detail and have more control over the final colors. The second piece started out as a full-color but messy sketch which I eventually polished -- I started off in Photoshop and then went to Illustrator to create the car asset to make it more realistic, as well as making some much needed atmospheric changes to the color palette as well as adding more detail to the final concept piece.
Project Struggles/Process:
I remember having the hardest time trying to make the character stay on model, and putting together a cohesive story. I started out with basic shapes like triangles and circles and went from there and added some value once I was happy with the art style. I then experimented with transferring ink drawings to things like procreate and Photoshop in order to polish them off and use the brush textures to add more depth to the artwork and art style. By the end, when I was creating the world for this project, I created a number of "symbols and signs", which helped to flesh out the world and eventually led to me making several full color digital pieces in addition to the 8-page comic.
